Whanganui Museum

Whanganui’s regional museum is dedicated to the people of its locale - their history, every day lives, their futures. From the stories and struggles of the first settlers and the formation of this city through to the evolution of Whanganui’s landscapes and environment, in particular its defining river, a mix of permanent and short term exhibits pay tribute to the area’s social and natural history.

Established in 1892 based on the private collection of Samuel Drew, the Whanganui Museum houses treasures of both national and international significance - there are Pacific artifacts from Asia and Cyprus.

Themes in the spotlight at the Whanganui Museum include domestic life, military, textiles, transport and technology and art. A recreated early 1900s Whanganui street brings this time period to life in a unique fashion. Maori heritage is well represented at the museum; specimens include a great waka, or war canoe - and inside the Lindauer gallery are portraits of notable Maori leaders. The Te Ati Haunui-a-Paparangi collection pays homage to the people who occupied these lands for generations. Geology and the animal kingdom also feature at the Whanganui Museum. Wildlife exhibits range from endangered and extinct birds like the huia, moa and kiwi, through to butterflies and insects.

The collection is extensive and only about 15% of items are on display at any one time; the rest still being accessible through the museum’s research programme. The museum also has a top notch shop, selling New Zealand made merchandise and souvenirs such as cards, books, DVDs and jewellery.

Set in the Whanganui cultural centre at Queens Park, the Whanganui Museum is not far from our rental depot and is open seven days a week.
